SOLSTICE— is an innovative (free-of-charge) platform that can be used to map and monitor FMNR and regreening efforts.
The Solstice platform includes both a mobile app and a web portal. The app is designed for collecting field data and even works in remote areas without connectivity or phone service—ensuring crucial information can be captured on the go. With the app, users can also accurately map and determine the size (in hectares or acres) of their restoration sites, which has long been a challenge in land restoration circles. Meanwhile, the web portal allows users to create customised survey forms, manage and aggregate data (e.g. across projects, regions, countries), and build dashboards and maps to track progress in real-time, such as the number of sites, hectares restored, and participating farmers.
We believe Solstice is the key that will unlock our ability to measure progress towards large-scale restoration targets—including the global goal of restoring 1 billion hectares of degraded land. We are currently trialling and field-tested Solstice in numerous regions in our Catalytic Countries, Kenya and Uganda. Once these trials are complete, we plan to encourage the use of Solstice for FMNR and regreening activities across other countries to drive restoration efforts worldwide.
